For The Love Of Tea. - Vol. 3
a short review of the film Black Tea and some of my favorite Black teas selections.
Coming back home from a trip to Spain I started flipping through the available movies for the journey. This is quite rare for me as i’m the passenger who never turns on their TV screen, yet watches whatever you're enjoying like a creep. However, this time I attempted to keep myself entertained, coming across the film Black Tea with a beautiful dark-skinned woman embraced by a mature Asian man on the cover. To say the least, I was curious.
[Disclaimer: I will not spoil the film for you!]
A young woman from the Ivory Coast leaves home after walking away from a marriage to find new love while following her passion for tea to the unfamiliar lands of Guangzhou, China. She meets him working in a small tea shop and is confronted with the truth that love can be complicated no matter the race, culture, or location — love has its layers.
This film is by no means Oscar-worthy, but something about it is intriguing. We are left both confused and captivated by the director’s portrayal of this love story and message, but what is successfully done is our peek into worlds unknown to most of us. I was completely unaware of the intertwined relationship between China and the Ivory Coast, and the film shows the little-known African community within China and its lingering effects across the African continent.
This story unveils the complexity of us as humans and the cultures that embed themselves in our spirits both calling to and diverging from one another. Somehow within the uncertainty of our differences, we still find ways to dance together in our hopes to belong and make sense of it all — and maybe one day we will.
